Inside mounted shutters (which is almost all installations) is where the shutters and frames fit into the recessed window opening. This is the case for both Z-Frame and Inside mounted L-Frame. Outside mount is where you mount your shutters frame to the wall surface of your room and the shutter sticks into the room a few inches instead of recessing inside the window opening. Only L-frame can be used our outside mounting. Outside mounting is most commonly used when the window opening depth is very shallow (under 1” deep from wall to glass) and the shutter louvers would otherwise hit the glass with tilted open.

Product Questions

Wood blinds/shutters are the perfect choice for many rooms and styles. Here’s why: High quality basswood is durable and gorgeous. These classic blinds are a superb choice to give your room a sophisticated look at half the cost of having a professional do it!

100% Hardwood and nothing less. To be more specific we use basswood and poplar witch has been the industry standard for many many years. Since basswood shutters are lighter in weight, larger wider panels can be made with less hinge fatigue. Windows look better with wider panels that allow more light and view. Basswood grows in the eastern and central North America. The basswood name derives from the inner bark or bast that is used as a source for making rope, basket weave and mats.

We wouldn’t install cheap products in our homes, so we don’t use anything but the best materials and top craftsmanship to build our shutters.

To prevent warping and sagging, we recommend each shutter panels max width be 36”. This is more of a guidline than a hard rule so if your measurements are close we can accomidate. This does not mean that windows wider than 36” cannot have shutters it means we will need to split that windows shutters up into multiple panels. For example, a 48” wide window will have 2 seperate 24” shutter panels.

Our DIY Shutter Kits will come to you primed white and ready for any color of paint you choose.

Z-Frame and L-Frame are both made from the same basic building block and both fit on the INSIDE of your window opening. The difference is the L-Frame only fits inside your window opening and is ideal for windows that already have trim moulding around them, or if the shutter needs to be pushed back into a deep window opening. The Z-Frame has window moulding attached and will give your windows a nice trimmed out look if your windows have bare drywall corners without and additional trim work. Z-Frame also covers an gaps up to 1” wide incase you have a window opening that is severly out of square.

You have two options:
Arched shutters are extremely custom and take a lot of precise measurements, we have a partnership with a company called O’Hair.com out of Texas who can make the pre-built panels for you and even painted or stained. For a pre-assembled, stained, or arched quote, please call. 801-949-0700. Other option is many customers that will simply put shutters in the lower section of their windows and leave the arch open for daylight, which is also a great look.

We offer a great selection of louver sizes. Our louvers vary in size from 2 ½ inches to 4 ½ inches and anywhere in between. The most popular blade is the 4 ½ inches with 3 ½ inches being a close second. We leave the choice up to the customer since each person has individual tastes and decorating styles.

Referring to the image below:
A) Shutter-the shutter is the entire window covering entity installed into the opening. It consists of all the parts, panels, and frame and can be quite large. Our example picture is only one shutter and two panels. B) Panel-the panel consists of one set of stiles, rails, and a section of louvers. Our example picture consists of two panels and only one shutter. The panels swing open on hinges much like your doors. C) Rail-the pieces at the top and bottom of the panel that provide structure to the shutter. A divider rail can also be placed in the panel to separate the top and the bottom louvers. Every shutter panel has at least a top and bottom rail. D) Louvers-the louvers are the blades that rotate open and closed. They vary in size from 1.25″ to 5.5″ and are all operated uniformly by the tilt rod. E)Tilt Rod-the tilt rod is the bar in the center of the panel that operates and rotates all the louver blades at once. F) Stiles-stiles are the vertical supports that the louver blades connect into. The top and bottom rails also join with the stiles to form the structural support for the louvers. All shutters have stiles. G) Frame or Mount-the frame surrounds all the panels in a particular panel set. The frame is usually attached to the inside of the window jamb, the wall, or a door. There are numerous frames and different applications require different frame mounts, but most shutters have some sort of frame.

No. Any type of wood shutter is not waterproof no matter what type of finish is applied or how well it is sealed. That’s why exterior decks have to be refinished every few years. There is an alternative in watered areas, however. All vinyl shutters are waterproof but will yellow over time. We don’t recommend them over a shower or bathtub that gets steam often.

You have two options a center tilt rod or a Hidden Tilt rod. When shutters do not have a rod in the center of the panel it is placed on the back side of the panel. This is called the hidden or sometimes the clear view design. The center tilt rods do wear out over years of use.

Yes. This has been a popular option in the last few years. You can provide your full window measurements and we will build your shutter to ½ the height provided. Typically these café style shutters will only include a left and right frame piece. The cross bar top frame is available upon request.

Yes. This is a common request we get from our customers. It is nice to be able to close the bottom section of you shutters for privacy but leave the top portion tilted open for lighting. This can be accomplished in two ways: Option One: by installing a fixed mid-rail in the center of the shutter panel which will separate your shutter into a clear upper and lower section. Option Two: Or our more popular option is to simply cut your tilt rod at the place where you would like the upper and lower sections to divide and now your shutter will have 2 separate removable sections without the fixed mid-rail bar always blocking the middle of your window. This option also allows for you to choose where you want the separation between the upper and lower sections to occur, For instance you can have the lower ⅔ close with the upper ⅓ stay open for light. If you wish for us to accommodate you by cutting the metal hidden tilt rods for you, please indicate that in the note section of the shopping cart during checkout next to your name.

Order Questions

We recommend measure the Width in 3 places (Top, Middle, Bottom) as well as the Height in 3 places (Left, Middle, Right) in case you window or drywall is a little out of square (most are) and give us the smallest of those 3 measurements to make sure your shutter kits fit properly.

Then send us only the smallest measurement of Width first x Height next You can send a pic of a drawing as well if you wish.

No. We will take ⅛” off each side to allow for variation in your window opening in case your window is not perfectly square or if you drywall is wavy in parts. This will ensure the shutter kits will not arrive too large to fit inside your window opening. If you ordered a Z-Frame any small gap will be covered up by the frame. If you ordered an inside L-Frame this small gap can easily be hidden with a quick bead of paintable caulk.

For window openings that are out of square we recommend using shims behind the Z frame option to square it out. That way your reveal around the panels will be even and have a more pleasing look to the eye.

We do not have a minimum order. We understand that window coverings are expensive, even at our amazing pricing here. We also understand that assembling your own shutters is a new idea and may seem a bit daunting do some. So we have removed our minimum order and invite you to order just 1 or 2 shutters to start if you are not feeling confident enough, or if your current budget will not allow you to order them all at the same time. We are confident that once you see how easy the kits really are you will be ready to order the rest of your windows.

Name of Window: Width X Height. here

The mount refers to the way you will mount your shutters, either inside or outside the window opening. Inside mounts are mounted inside the window opening that is recessed from the wall. An inside mount provides a clean look and is probably the most common way to hang shutters today. Both Z-Frame and L-Frame can be used for an inside mount. The minimum window sill depth for an inside mount varies depending on the louver size selection. The depth required for each product can be found here. Outside mounts are installed outside the window opening and are mounted either on the wood frame or drywall surface of the room. Outside mounts are great for windows with obstructions (such as security-system hardware), or for windows with a very shallow window sill depth that would make an inside mount impossible. An outside mount can also be used to make a window appear larger, or to hide an unattractive window.

YES we can, add instruction to do this in the notes, and we’ll cut the rod for you before shipping

No, we don’t pre-drill the holes to attach to the wall, that way you can adjust the hinges to where you need them and use a framing nail which has a smaller hole and is easier to paint and cover.

Yes all hinges are in white, you can special order other colors if needed, add to instructions in the notes.
